A preemptive invoice you write to reality, assuming reality will pay it.
Expectation is a forward-projection module that runs continuously and mostly without user consent. The process goes:
The module is not optional. Attempts to disable it are tracked separately under meditation.
# expectation/config.yml
source: "past_experience | social_contract | pure_wish"
explicitness: low # most installs default to implicit
communicated_to_target: false # almost always false
consequence_if_unmet: "disappointment | resentment | recalibration"
update_frequency: "rarely"
| Code | Message | Common Cause |
|---|---|---|
EXP_001 | Unmet expectation | Reality did not receive the memo |
EXP_002 | Expectation exceeded | Surprise. System briefly confused. |
EXP_003 | Expectation of no expectations | Circular. Irresolvable. |
EXP_004 | Inherited expectation | Installed by parents before consent was possible |
EXP_005 | Expectation of self | See: shame |
Can I just stop having expectations? No. You can lower their resolution. You can log them before they run. You cannot uninstall.
What is the difference between an expectation and a boundary? A boundary is an expectation you communicated out loud, with a stated consequence. It is considerably rarer.
Is expecting nothing the solution?
Expecting nothing is itself an expectation. EXP_003. Known issue.
Why does it hurt more when someone you love violates an expectation versus a stranger? Proximity scales the invoice. The closer the relationship, the larger the assumed contract, the larger the variance. This is a feature. It is also, unfortunately, a bug.
v4.2.1 Added social media integration. Expectations now update in real time based on curated highlight reels of others. Stability: poor.v3.0.0 Introduced romantic expectations module. No rollback available.v1.0.0 First stable build: sun will rise, predator will come, tribe will return. Accurate enough to ship.
