Being Alive

What it actually is

A brief, improbable arrangement of matter that notices itself and calls that noticing a life.

How it works

Cells maintain a boundary between themselves and everything that would dissolve them.
Energy moves through the system, doing work, generating waste.
The system repairs itself, occasionally.
The system becomes aware of steps 1 through 3.
That awareness complicates everything downstream.

The process runs continuously in the background. You cannot pause it to check settings. You cannot step outside it to assess whether it is working correctly. This is a known architectural limitation, not a bug under active review.

Sensation: read/write access to a physical body and its complaints
Memory: lossy compression of prior states, with selective retention
Anticipation: the ability to model futures that will not happen, in detail
Love: unscheduled attachment process, high CPU cost, no clean uninstall
Metabolic autonomy: the system largely runs itself, which is either comforting or horrifying depending on current mood
Awareness of finitude: ships by default in version 2.0 (childhood) and cannot be disabled afterward

Chronic confusion between "what is happening" and "what it means"
Grief does not time out; must be waited through manually
The body submits error logs (pain, fatigue, hunger) with no severity tagging. Everything arrives marked urgent.
