A data structure for storing gratitude in someone else's future.
A person plants a seed. The seed does not care about the person. Years pass. Decades, sometimes. The canopy fills in slowly, like a long argument finally resolving. Someone who was not born yet sits under it one afternoon without thinking about where it came from.
The planter is not there. That is the entire point.
The mechanism has no feedback loop. The original contributor receives no notification. No confirmation email. No merge approval. The work simply continues running in their absence, silently, doing exactly what it was designed to do.
planter:
motivation: unverified
expected_return: none
required_lifespan: less than the tree's
growth_rate: slow
visibility_of_impact: low
ego_involvement: optional but usually zero
patience_threshold: generational
Who does this? People who have quietly decided that the future is real, even though they will not live in it.
Is it worth it? This question cannot be evaluated by the entity best positioned to answer it.
What if no one ever sits under it? The tree does not have this concern. Neither, eventually, does the planter.
Is this grief? Adjacent. Different root system.
This is one of the oldest patterns in the codebase. Predates written language. Predates most things we consider civilization. Someone looked at a small stick in the dirt and thought: not for me. For whoever comes after. Then they walked away and did not make a speech about it.
The spec is simple. The implementation takes a lifetime.
The tree is still running.
